Chinese socialism and Cuba

Fidel met with a Chinese official, where he emphasized the "importance of the concept of socialism with Chinese characteristics." Does that mean he wants to open a Hooters? Maybe it means he's got a hankering for Dunkin' Donuts. Or Taco Bell. Writing his Granma column gets tiring, so he might just want a latte.

I think you misunderstood. By "socialism with Chinese characteristics," he meant the ability to detain, beat and execute the political opposition while the American president happily shows up for the Olympic games.

My bad. But it might also mean more Mercedes for the very wealthy.

Didn't the Chinese gov't do official studies of the "Pinochet model" of capitalistic economics combined with authoritarian, militaristic, top-down rule?

Fidel and the Chinese can commiserate about having several million countrymen less than 100 nautical miles away, making their lives miserable for the past 5 decades.

You guys aren't look at the possibilities in Chinese socialism in positive light. Just think of it as broadening the range of opportunities open to you there, from possibility of poltical executions to having a Mercedes, or maybe both, over time. See you, just have to think of these things as marketing challenges if you're in the PRC :)

LOL...buddy of mine from grad school had been a prosecutor in the PRC...and had racked up a lot of "wins" in "capital cases". But alas, the rewards of international financial transactions eventually overcame the more mundane tasks of billing families for the cost of bullets used to execute their relatives.

Socialism is an embarassment to the human race, really. All it is is the age-old "divine right of kings" but with the justification of pseudo-science rather than religion. It is and has been far and away the predominant form of fascism in the world.

Boli: Chairman Mao and his political descendants are "one-bullet managers".
